Delicious Chocolate Diamonds…Au Chocolat!

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices, Jewelry Advice | Posted on 30-11-2009

When one usually thinks of diamonds, (especially the perfect diamond) what usually comes to mind are those that are clear and white; diamonds believed to be so exceptionally perfect, that blinding rainbows burst out with every beam of light touching them.

chocolate-diamondThose types of diamonds, will more than likely boast a rating high on the official clarity scale chart. However, just suppose…what if…just what if… one happens to stumble upon the diamond of their dreams ; and it just happens to be a deep brown; with a radiating warmth and richness that can compare with no other? Many have found this to be just the case.

Back in the early 2000’s , a company by the name of Le Vian, no doubt noticing that many had an affinity for this type of diamond, capitalized on this fact. Prior to this, diamonds that were of this deep, warm, chocolate color were known as “low color (or brown) diamonds”. Since that time, many celebrities have developed a fondness for diamonds of this type; oftentimes being seen on the red carpet, and at many other high profile events wearing Le Vian diamonds.

Through somewhat aggressive campaigning, Le Vian has successfully marketed these diamonds; presenting them to an audience that has a natural tendency to thrive on the unusual and the daring. And with this; brown diamonds became “in”. Lest we forget: De Beers, via similar aggressive campaigning, had been highly successful in identifying what, at the time, appeared to be a niche market just a few short decades ago. Chocolate diamonds…could they possibly be for you? Well, to us it seems that it’s all just a matter of taste

Chameleon Diamonds – Diamonds of Changing Color

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices | Posted on 03-09-2009

biggest-chameleon-diamond-in-the-world-chopard-1207660713Real diamond lovers are well known for seeking out unusual, as well as, one-of-a-kind characteristics in a gem; oftentimes searching near and far until the jewel of their dreams is found . One of the most interesting and rare type of diamonds that can be found, are known as chameleon diamonds. This name is derived from the fact that, depending on temperature and various types of light exposure, this diamond is subject to changing color; ranging from a soft yellow to unusual shades of green.

Remember the mood rings of the 1980’s, and how they would change from black to various other colors? Well, think of this as being a similar type of reaction, but on a more expensive level.

These types of diamonds are so rare, that most of us will never have an opportunity to even see one. Those of us who are fortunate enough to see one, will note that the best way to observe this unusual phenomena is to, at first limit its exposure to light for a few days, then later bring it again out into the open, and allow it to experience the change. The change often will not be a dramatic one, but, although subtle it should, at least be a noticeable one. In reality, for the vast majority of us, the price of a diamond of this kind is cost prohibitive and more of a curiosity than anything else.

Genuine diamonds of this type are accompanied by a GIA certificate, and will have a designation of “chameleon“ noted in its authentication documents. If it is the unusual you seek, this may just be the change you may be looking for.

Diamonds – Coming Up Roses!

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices, Jewelry Advice | Posted on 21-07-2009

The Rose cut is among the oldest in diamond cuts; and is predominately found in rare antique jewelry. It was so named because of the pattern it displays when viewed from above….that of a blossoming rose.

This vintage diamond cut has its origin in the early 1500’s. It was actually quite popular; and could often be seen set in elaborately filigreed pendants, brooches, rings and bracelets. Diamonds cut in the rose pattern, were painstakingly done by hand; which naturally produced irregularities, but at the same time, it gave each individual stone its own unique character.

The rose cut became less popular as newer and more modern ways of diamond cutting were introduced. Machines, and state-of-the-art technology have since provided professional gem cutters with the ability to process diamonds with precision, while at the same time showcasing each individual stone’s best features and aiming for the maximum “wow“ factor; which the rose cut is not particularly famous for. The appeal appears to be more in the skill taken to turn a diamond into a wearable work of art, than in the actual shine. However, what it lacks in fire and brilliance; is more than made up in its quiet charm and scarcity. Many of these diamonds are quite rich in history and have interesting backgrounds.

Locating diamonds in the obsolete rose cut pattern is rare; as this cut is seldom made with diamonds found during these modern times. And so, as the ongoing quest for uniqueness continues, there has been a resurging public interest in this particular diamond cut; thus again proving: Everything old is new again.

Diamonds Online

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices | Posted on 12-07-2009

In today’s world, it is possible to purchase just about anything online; and we do mean anything… from the most inexpensive plastic bauble, to costly diamonds. That’s right! Even diamonds. And so the question arises: Would you entrust your hard earned dollars to the unseen and the relatively unknown? Before you take the plunge, let us examine a few things that need to be taken under consideration.

The good:
Variety- Choosing the online route opens up a buyer’s selection process; giving the potential buyer many options; perhaps due to higher inventories and accessibility to the market.

Cost- Low overhead may allow some vendors a little more flexibility in passing savings on to the customer. If a buyer does his homework, many great deals can be made, using this particular option.

The bad:
Although there are many checks and balances in place, doing business online can be inherently risky

Because of not seeing the item in person, there is always the possibility of disappointment

Questions that need to be asked:

  • Confidence – Is the vendor a trusted one, with a good selling history?
  • Guarantee – Does the vendor stand behind his/her product
  • Returns – Is there a generous return policy in place?

Fortunately, there are a number of things that a potential buyer can do to make an intelligent choice, and to protect themselves. Make sure that all of the legwork is done up front…by YOU! Education is crucial. Thoroughly check out the vendor’s reputation; customer feedback can be very telling. Be sure to obtain an appraisal…an independent one. Also, never underestimate your ‘gut feeling’. If something about the potential transaction does not ‘feel’ right, do not feel obligated to go through with it. Be a smart consumer!

How to Choose the Perfect Diamond for Your Bride

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices, Jewelry Advice, Ring Selection | Posted on 11-06-2009

Colorful Diamonds

Picking out a diamond engagement ring is a very exciting and memorable experience. The more you know about diamonds the better you will be at finding the perfect diamond to fit your budget. To be able to choose a good quality diamond you must first understand the 4 C’s. The 4 C’s are cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

When a jeweler talks about a diamond’s cut they are not referring to the shape. The shape refers to the general appearance of the diamond. They are talking about the angles and proportions that are made when a rough diamond is transformed into a polished diamond.

The cut is probably the most important and the hardest to figure out when it comes to choosing a diamond.  The brilliance of the diamond depends heavily on its cut. The cut gives a diamond the brightness that shines throughout the diamond. Because the cut is so important there are several grading methods that have been developed to help determine the cut.  The grades are Ideal, Very Good, Good and Fair/Poor cuts.

The Ideal cut is intended to maximize brilliance and usually is more expensive.  Very Good cut diamonds will reflect most of the light that enters them creating a good deal of brilliance. The Good cut diamond can offer an excellent cost savings to you if you are trying to stay within a budget. The Good cut offers quality and beauty for a reasonable price. Most reputable jewelers stay away from cuts that are Fair to Poor, because this cut only reflects a small portion of light.

Most diamonds will contain some type of flaw or inclusions that happened during the formation process.  The number, size and visibility of these flaws determine the clarity of the diamond.  Diamonds that have less flaws or imperfections will create more brilliance and therefore are highly prized and pricier.

When it comes to diamonds, no color is the most desirable. This is because it allows the most reflection of light.  When jewelers are grading the color of a diamond, they refer to a professional color scale.  The scale begins with the highest rating of the letter “D” for colorless and a color scale continues all the way to Z. You will notice that there may be a very faint hint of yellow apparent in diamonds graded J through M. These grades of diamonds look very nice in a gold setting.

The carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured.  Large diamonds are less common than small diamonds. The larger the diamond is, the higher the price.  To decide on the carat size you first need to determine your budget.  Deciding on the carat size is about striking a balance between size and quality.

These are just a few things that you should know when you are deciding on which diamond engagement ring to buy the love of your life.  It’s wise to shop around and do your homework and learn all you can about diamonds and pricing.  This is just a simple overview to give you an idea of what you need to look for.  You can do your own research and find out more about the 4 C’s and Diamond Certificates so you can make a knowledgeable decision on the ring for your fiancé.

Hearts and Arrows Diamonds

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Choices, Jewelry Advice, Ring Selection | Posted on 18-03-2009

Spring is in the air, and along with the impending warmer weather season, comes thoughts of flowers, love and feelings of sentimentality. For those who may be in the market for a type of engagement ring that has the ability to easily stir up a lively conversation; or a diamond that readily brings Cupid to mind; a Hearts and Arrows diamond may just be the thing to suit your fancy. (Yes, there really is such a thing. ) A Hearts and Arrows diamond is a brilliant round shaped diamond that, when looked at from the top, reflects the likeness of arrows. When turned over, and viewed from a totally different angle, the display has a distinct similarity to the appearance of hearts.

172-symmetryallexThe history of the Hearts and Arrows diamonds cut is quite interesting. Originally discovered in Japan during the 1980’s; and warmly accepted in the United States during the 1990’s, it is so named due to the unusual pattern it displays when placed under a special diamond viewer.

This particular cut, known for its precise symmetry, takes more than double the amount of time to cut and polish, as it would take to produce a similar sized regular round brilliant diamond cut, so expect the price to be at least comparatively higher.

Only a small percentage of diamonds produced today can be termed as authentic Hearts and Arrows. While checking the background and authenticity of any diamond is always a wise thing to do, this important step becomes particularly important when selecting any specialty diamond pieces. This means that any purchaser would need to take the necessary steps to ensure that any diamond labeled as such, has the characteristics of a true Hearts and Arrows diamond, because after all, a true love deserves to be recognized with a true diamond.

Happy Spring from Danforth Diamonds, who believe in helping you find the perfect diamond.

Diamonds on the Red Carpet

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices, Diamond Earrings, Jewelry Advice | Posted on 19-02-2009

Date: February 22, 2009
Place: Kodak Theater, Hollywood California
Event: 81st Annual Academy Awards

What’s that you say? You “forgot all about it!“ Pity. Well, we haven’t! Due to another previous engagement, we, regretfully, will be unable to attend this year. However, we do have inside information as to what can be expected to be seen on the red carpet. Of course, there will be the usual cameras, limousines, haute couture…and, let’s not forget jewelry. On this occasion, accessories will reign supreme; with diamonds being among the most talked about accessory of them all!

With the state of the U.S. economy being as it is now; simplicity appears to be the “buzz” this year. While you can still be sure to witness a parade of dangling sparklers, many attendees have chosen to present an understated look this year. Button earrings and diamond studs will prove to be safe choices for those who have made the decision to highlight a magnificent gown instead.

Another surprise is that many of the diamond earrings worn will be clip-ons. This is not just a retro-fashion trend, but it has a practical use; as many diamond earrings tend to be heavy, which makes the clip-on a sensible alternative.  Finding the perfect diamond to wear was not an easy task for any of the stars attending.

This is not to say that there will not be any spectacular diamond pieces on display. There will be…that’s part of the allure. However, before you begin stirring up feelings of jealousy within yourself, please be assured that many of these priceless pieces are on loan; and that the wearer is without a doubt, shadowed by tuxedo clad security personnel, who are there to protect the wearer, and then gather up the baubles shortly after the festivities are over.

Now you have it! And so, although we will miss attending the Academy Awards this year, let’s make definite plans to get together next year. In the meantime,  we’ll just have “our people” call “your people.” Let’s do lunch sometime.

Ta Ta! Oh, and let’s both be sure to pick out the perfect diamond bracelet for next year’s event.

Diamonds…In Black and White

Black Diamonds

Still looking for a unique and unusual jewelry gift for Valentine’s day? If so, you may want to consider a gift of a Black diamond jewelry piece. Black (or carbonado) diamonds can be found only in certain parts of Central Africa and Brazil; and are usually smaller in size than your typical white diamond. You will find that Carbonado diamonds also have a few of their own special characteristics. This, in itself would make for an interesting discussion; as we could go into a rather lengthy scientific explanation as to how they are discovered and formed. However, for the time being, we’ll leave out the science, and just focus on what sets them apart and makes them nice to look at.

Because of the inclusions of other minerals within them, Carbanado diamonds tend to have quite a different look…, an unusual luminous quality being among them. Most will agree that this feature only adds to their exceptional appearance, and gives them their own unique identifying marks.

A jewelry piece composed entirely of Carbanado (or black diamonds) can be a stunning choice; but since this type of diamond is pretty much a new arrival on the popular jewelry fashion scene; many who are not quite used to seeing them, may choose to select a diamond jewelry piece where they are used as compliments to other gems. For instance: How about a setting with an alternating patterning of black diamonds, white diamonds? Whatever you choose to do, take care that your decision rests on a jewelry piece that you are proud to give, and most of all…make sure that it reflects the warm spirit of the occasion. In other words: Put your heart into it.

Happy Valentines Day!

Let’s Make One Thing Perfectly Clear…

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices | Posted on 24-11-2008

“I can see clearly now,…I can see all obstacles in my way” – lyricist, Johnny Nash

It is a very exciting time isn’t it? The prospect of buying an engagement ring for your love of a lifetime. You begin to think it only reasonable that such a perfect love be symbolized with a perfect diamond engagement ring. But, have you done your homework?

Please keep in mind that diamonds, real diamonds are created by nature; and are prone to having at least a few blemishes, or inclusions. Because of this, the industry has developed a grading scale. This scale is called the GIA clarity grading scale, and is based on what can be seen under a 10X loupe magnification. A “perfectly clear”, or colorless diamond would be one without obstructions blocking any light passing through it; the result being one of extraordinary brilliance. As you may have already guessed, these types of diamonds are fairly rare and can be quite costly.

Yes, engagement and wedding rings are to be chosen carefully, and should be expected to be beautiful. Not to worry…If an absolutely perfect and flawless diamond is out of your budget reach, there are a number of in-between grades that you may find to be almost equally as beautiful, quite acceptable, and to your liking. For instance: In the case of a multi-stone diamond ring, you may choose to have a larger, more visible stone be of a finer quality than any smaller companion diamonds surrounding it.

Again, since selecting an engagement or diamond wedding ring is something that one does not do on an every day basis, it is good to seek the advice and expertise of a reputable jeweler, who will be more than happy to assist you in being clear with your selection.

Diamonds of Exquisite Color

Posted by admin | Posted in Diamond Advice, Diamond Choices | Posted on 22-09-2008

Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue. I can sing a rainbow…” – Arthur Hamilton, lyricist.

Usually, when one thinks of diamonds (see the history of diamonds), these are usually not the first colors that readily come to mind. Many do not realize that, like rainbows, diamonds are available in a variety of hues and color saturations. One of the most famous diamonds of color is currently housed at the Smithsonian Museum… the spectacular, and well known ,45.52-carat, dark blue Hope diamond.

Of course, the traditional white diamond is still the diamond of choice among the majority of diamond enthusiasts. However, the color variety is fast becoming popular; especially as many celebrities are often seen on television and in magazines sporting diamonds of color. Often coupled with other precious gemstones, diamonds in shades of yellow and pink are among the most popular being worn today. Along with color, some diamond aficionados have chosen to become just as equally adventurous when it comes to selecting a cut. While oval, radiant and pear shapes are still timeless classics; the less familiar Asscher and Cushion cuts are often the unusual cuts of choice. Both of these cuts are similar, in that each are many faceted, and highlight diamond depth.

This does not mean that diamonds of color are the least expensive, nor does it mean that the attributes of cut, clarity and overall brilliance of color should be ignored. These standards, as well as the industry specific and acceptable standards of diamond quality, would still apply when it comes to selecting a diamond of a shade other than classic white. Color diamonds should still be expected to sparkle, dazzle and delight; just as much as their traditional counterparts.

A word of caution: Care should be taken that the diamond selected is one that is truly authentic. As technology has become more sophisticated, many lab-created “diamonds” are difficult to distinguish from the “real thing“. A reputable jeweler should be able to present to the buyer, a certificate of authenticity , so as to leave them with the peace of mind that comes with making such an expensive purchase.

Breathtaking , beautiful and brilliant…the varieties are endless. Which would you choose?
